Overview, Requirements & Solution

A consolidated executive summary of Tetso College's campus wireless network transformation with Indio Networks.

Overview

Tetso College is one of the leading colleges in Nagaland, catering to students across Northeast India with undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Arts, Commerce, Management, Social Work, IT, and Music. To support online learning, research, and campus activities, Tetso College required an authenticated, fast, and robust Wi-Fi network across its expansive campus.

Key Requirements

  • Campus-Wide Authenticated Wi-Fi: Secure access for students, faculty, and visitors.
  • User-Friendly Interface: Intuitive captive portal registration capturing user profiles.
  • Fast & Robust Wi-Fi: High-throughput Wi-Fi 6 coverage for dense academic blocks.
  • Bandwidth Management Policy: Fair-share bandwidth quotas per user group.
  • Centralized Management & Tracking: Real-time user activity logs and AP diagnostics.

How We Helped

  • Provided an affordable, highly cost-effective network solution.
  • Created a customized captive portal capturing email, phone, and IDs.
  • Enforced group-based bandwidth allocation for guests, students, and staff.
  • Implemented MAC binding, discouraging multiple logins on the same account.
  • Blocked mature & non-academic URLs while tracking detailed website logs.
  • Centralized single-dashboard management with automated AP alerting.

Operational Challenges & Technical Solutions

Addressing the networking and security hurdles of a sprawling educational institution with enterprise controller hardware, Wi-Fi 6 access points, and intelligent policy enforcement.

The Operational Challenges

Unauthenticated traffic, bandwidth abuse & unmanaged APs
Unauthenticated Access & Traffic Congestion

Spread across large acres with a sizable student and visitor base, anyone within range could connect directly. This caused severe bandwidth congestion, unmonitored traffic, and major security vulnerabilities.

Absence of Captive Portal & User Accountability

The lack of a captive portal prevented the IT team from recording incoming and outgoing users or capturing essential identifiers such as email IDs, phone numbers, and physical device MAC addresses.

Credential Sharing & Multiple Simultaneous Logins

Multiple students shared the same login ID and password across numerous unregistered devices simultaneously, exploiting campus internet access and overloading the network.

No Group-Based Bandwidth Policies

All students, staff, and visitors were treated equally on flat bandwidth rules. This led to uneven consumption, severe speed drops during peak academic hours, and interrupted online classes.

Lack of Centralized AP Monitoring & Web Filtering

Admins had no central dashboard to monitor individual access points or troubleshoot failures, while unblocked mature and non-academic websites distracted students and consumed valuable bandwidth.

The Indio Solution

UniBox U-500 Gateway & UniMax UM-325AX Wi-Fi 6 APs
UniBox Network Gateway U-500 & AAA Portal

Installed the UniBox U-500 Gateway with built-in AAA server and customized captive portal, capturing email IDs, mobile numbers, device MAC IDs, student IDs, staff IDs, and visitor data upon registration.

MAC Binding & Automatic Re-Authentication

Implemented MAC binding to tie accounts directly to specific physical hardware. Registered devices reconnect automatically without re-entering credentials, strictly preventing account sharing.

Role-Based Bandwidth Allocation & Fair Usage

Segmented users into distinct groups (Students, Staff, Guests) with tailored download speeds, session durations, and bandwidth caps, eliminating peak-hour congestion across campus.

Web Content Filtering & Academic Whitelisting

Configured URL filtering on UniBox to block mature, non-academic, and distracting websites while whitelisting approved educational portals and recording comprehensive web activity logs.

UniMax UM-325AX Wi-Fi 6 APs & Central Console

Deployed dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) access points offering 3000 Mbps throughput and 2x2 MU-MIMO for 100+ concurrent users per AP, managed via a unified dashboard with MAC-level issue alerts.

Implementation Journey

Indio Networks executed an end-to-end deployment strategy at Tetso College, transforming an open, unmanaged campus network into a secure, high-speed, and centrally controlled Wi-Fi 6 environment.

Cost-Effective Academic Network

Combining the UniBox U-500 Gateway with high-density UniMax UM-325AX Access Points delivered an enterprise-grade solution engineered specifically within institutional budget parameters.

Phase 1: Campus-Wide RF Site Survey & AP Mapping

Conducted a thorough RF heat-mapping audit across academic blocks, libraries, auditorium, outdoor amphitheater, and administrative zones to calculate optimum AP placement and eliminate coverage dead spots.

Phase 2: UniBox U-500 Core Gateway Installation

Installed the UniBox U-500 Gateway at the campus core, configuring the built-in AAA authentication server, DHCP scopes, user registration database, and custom captive portal.

Phase 3: UniMax UM-325AX Wi-Fi 6 AP Deployment

Mounted high-density UniMax UM-325AX enterprise access points with 2x2 MU-MIMO and omnidirectional antennas, ensuring 100+ concurrent student connections per AP at 3000 Mbps aggregate speed.

Phase 4: Policy Enforcement, MAC Binding & Dashboard Handover

Enforced group-based bandwidth allocations, enabled MAC binding, activated URL web filtering/whitelisting, and trained campus IT administrators on the centralized management dashboard.
