MSRTC Connected Bus Fleet Case Study

MSRTC: In-Vehicle Infotainment & Wi-Fi Across India's Largest Bus Fleet

Engineering custom ruggedized in-vehicle Wi-Fi routers with 2,000 hours of onboard media caching and ignition-sensing power controls in partnership with KPIT Technologies.

MSRTC Fleet Wi-Fi Deployment

About Maharashtra State Road Transport (MSRTC)

Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) operates one of the largest public bus transport fleets in the world, with over 20,000 buses carrying more than 7 million passengers every single day across urban and rural corridors of Maharashtra.

In collaboration with global technology partner KPIT Technologies, MSRTC initiated an ambitious passenger digital upgrade programme to provide onboard Wi-Fi and stored infotainment to passengers during long highway journeys.

Indio Networks engineered a purpose-built, rugged automotive Wi-Fi router featuring local solid-state media storage capable of hosting over 2,000 hours of streaming movies, music, and educational videos directly to passenger smartphones without consuming costly mobile cellular bandwidth.

Overview, Requirements & Solution

A consolidated executive summary of MSRTC's connected vehicle infotainment rollout with Indio Networks.

Overview

MSRTC required a ruggedized, vibration-proof wireless router to provide high-speed local streaming media and intermittent 4G internet for passengers travelling across state highways.

Key Requirements

  • Automotive Hardened: Resist extreme engine heat, dust, road vibrations, and vehicle voltage fluctuations.
  • 2,000+ Hrs Local Storage: Cache movies, regional music, and educational videos on-box.
  • Smart Power Ignition: Auto-power cycle with bus engine ignition and graceful delayed shutdown.
  • Fleet Cloud Management: Remote telemetry, GPS route tracking, and automated content refresh at depots.

How We Helped

  • Designed custom Rugged Automotive In-Vehicle Routers.
  • Integrated local media streaming server & captive portal.
  • Engineered 9V-36V automotive surge protection.
  • Enabled Indio Cloud depot sync & fleet diagnostics.

Operational Challenges & Technical Solutions

Overcoming physical road shocks, harsh bus electrical environments, and cellular blackspots with dedicated automotive networking.

The Operational Challenges

Key constraints, bottlenecks & network hurdles
Severe Electrical & Voltage Spikes

Commercial vehicle batteries experience massive voltage spikes during engine cranking that destroy standard enterprise Wi-Fi hardware.

Highway Cellular Dark Zones

Long stretches of rural highways have patchy or non-existent 4G cellular coverage, interrupting live video streaming.

Physical Shock & Continuous Vibration

Constant road bumps and unpaved state highways cause conventional moving storage and soldered electronic pins to fail.

Excessive 4G Data Cellular Costs

Streaming HD video over 4G SIMs for 50 passengers per bus across thousands of buses was financially unviable.

The Indio Solution

Tailored architecture, controller features & management
Automotive Power Regulation

Engineered wide-range DC power supply (9V-36V) with transient voltage surge suppressor (TVS) and ignition trigger shutdown.

Local Content Server (Zero Data Cost)

Passengers connect to the bus Wi-Fi and stream 2,000+ hours of movies and music hosted directly on the router's solid-state flash disk.

Industrial Shock & Dust Proof Enclosure

IP-rated rugged chassis with conformal-coated PCBs certified for heavy automotive road vibration and high cabin temperatures.

Depot Wi-Fi Auto-Content Sync

Routers automatically connect to high-speed depot Wi-Fi when buses return to bus depots at night to update media libraries and upload telemetry.

Implementation Journey

Indio Networks and KPIT Technologies deployed custom in-vehicle hardware across MSRTC depots, ensuring seamless entertainment for millions of long-distance bus commuters.

Seamless & Turnkey

Engineered for high availability, vehicle electrical resilience, and centralized cloud monitoring.

Phase 1: Automotive Prototype & Road Stress Testing

Tested custom router hardware against severe voltage fluctuations, extreme cabin thermal peaks, and rough terrain vibrations.

Phase 2: Local Infotainment & Portal Development

Engineered lightweight web portal providing HD media streaming, games, and MSRTC passenger advisory notices.

Phase 3: Bus Depot Auto-Sync Infrastructure

Configured high-throughput depot Wi-Fi access points to automatically push new movie catalogs and retrieve health logs at night.

Phase 4: Fleet Rollout Across Maharashtra

Deployed routers across intercity express bus routes, delivering continuous entertainment to over 100,000 daily viewers.
